Barnhill, John Basil (and others)
The American Anti-Socialist Volumes 1, Numbers 1 to 6 Inclusive and Plus Other Material
Washington D.C.: John Basil Barnhill Hard Cover. Ex-Library. Plain black cloth binding with library call letters, bookplate on front pastedown and usual pocket in rear. An interesting and scarce collection of material, including a complete run of the American Anti-Socialist (6 issues, 80 pages) and a small collection of other material. There is a small 8 page tipped-in advertising pamphlet on the front flyleaf with a listing of the One Hundred Best Anti-Socialist Books for sale by the Anti-Socialist Book Company, compiled by Barnhill. Following the bound volumes of the Anti-Socialist is found these additional items: i) Berger Attacks the Smalll Farmer, What to Read on Socialism (4 pages), ii) Why the Socialistic State is Impossible by Auberon Herbert (2 pages), iii) What do we Owe to the State, Liberty Leaflet #51 from the Liberty and Property Defence League (2 pages), iv) Socialism means the Abolition of Family Life (4 pages), v) Private Property; or, Old-Fashioned Folly and New Philosophy by MD O'Brien (4 pages), vi) Different Methods of Workmen's Compensation Insurance by Edson S Lott Conference on Social Insurance 1916 (14 pages), vi) Fallacies of Compulsory Social Insurance by Edson S. Lott before the American Association for the Advancement of Science (12 pages), vii) Dangers in Too much legistlation - bureaucratic interference with Banking by John W. Meeks (5 pages, very tightly trimmed at foreedge with some loss of text), viii) The Taxation of Organized Beneficence by Darwin P. Kingsley (15 pages), and ix) The Impossible Vagaries of Socialism its Fallacies and Illusions, by Robert Larmour (86 pages with original wrappers preserved). The advertising pamphlet from Barnhill notes that there are available on approval 3 bound collections including about 10 of the best debates on Socialism. Given the way this volume was put together it would not surprise us to find that other sets had different contents, perhaps put together with what was on hand - the Anti-Socialist set is listed in the advertisement, and "five other large pamphlets".
