The Billings Microscope Collection of the Medical Museum Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, 2nd Edition
Washington, D. C.: American Registry of Pathology 1987. Trade Paperback. Reprint. 2nd Edition. 1987 reprint of the 1974 second edition. Pages are somewhat thinner than the original, with the textblock bulking 1/2 inch (the first printing bulks about 5/8 inches). Otherwise identical with a slightly different cover design. One of the established references in the field. The microscope collection documented here is amazing, having been started by Lieutenant John S. Billings, a medical officer of the US Army, and curator of the Army Medical Museum from 1883 to 1893. It is very helpful for dating microscopes by collectors, dealers, and historians. This edition contains an additional 32 pages of microscopes added to the collection since the first edition which was published in 1967. Many, many photographs, descriptions of each instrument (including dimensions) make this an essential reference for the collector, dealer, or historian. Black and white photos, 237 pages plus index and introduction. A very nice copy noting occasional soiling to the wrappers.
