Typed Letter Signed from Jonas Salk to Maurice Fox mentioning Leo Szilard

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: [ University of Pittsburgh ] 1960. First Edition. Single 8 1/2 x 11 page. TLS (typed letter signed) dated March 25, 1960 on University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine letterhead. The letter from Salk is addressed to Dr. Maurice S. Fox at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, thanking his friend 'Maurie' for keeping Salk up to date on Leo Szilard's 'scavengings'. Near fine, with mailing folds. 'You have been very kind to forward Leo's scavengings to me. I have enjoyed as much your notes and comments. Whenever I speak to Leo on the telephone and ask him how he is, he always says, Very Fine, even in the period to which you referred in the note that reached me in La Jolla. I hope to see you one of these days -- many thanks, again.' Signed just with his first name, in ink 'Jonas'. Near Fine. Unbound. [17561]

Maury was a molecular biologist and friend of Leo Szilard's. He helped Szilard continue to work while Szilard was in the hospital with cancer in 1960. Szilard is perhaps best known for his work on the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb. Dr. Jonas E. Salk is best known for his discovery of a safe and effective polio vaccine. His development of the vaccine was completed during a very intense period of several years (even though other scientists had been pursuing different research paths since the late 1930s). The new vaccine was officially announced on April 12, 1955. A competing 'live-virus' vaccine by Dr. Sabin was eventually discontinued in favor of Salks 'dead-virus' vaccine because of the greater efficacy of Salk's vaccine.
