[ Textiles ] Madison's Complete Grading System Improved and Extended Coats, Vests and Trousers from One Model

New York: Jno J. Mitchell Co 1910. First Edition. 71 pages. 11 x 15 inches. Original publishers' green cloth with gold title lettering on front cover (spine blank) "MADISON'S | COMPLETE | GRADING SYSTEM | [bar] | IMPROVED AND EXTENDED". Hinges cracked but holding, the whole a bit loose having been apparently laid flat at many places throughout the text in use. The book details for the practitioner how to take a pattern for clothing, and practically scale it to another size using some scientific method. While this approach might seem obvious to some, the author notes that their previous work in this area was being copied and has had in their words an impact in the clothing business. From what we've gathered from some quick background reading, this approach was initially useful as the textile industry moved from singly fitted and produced clothing to a more highly manufactured "cookie-cutter" approach. A scarce title, with only two copies in OCLC/Worldcat each of a different date (1883, 1887), and none online. The author is credited in OCLC with over a dozen titles in this topic area going back to 1878, most with just a few copies in libraries. See Trautman's Clothing America Bibliography for additional titles by this maker including an earlier edition from 1887. Good. Hard Cover. [18407]
