Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Trissino, a Renaissance humanist, poet, dramatist, and grammarian. Born of a patrician family in Vicenza, Giovanni Giogio Trissino (1478-1550) was exiled from Venice for political reasons, but found favor with a series of Popes who offered their protection. His drama Sophonisba (1515), which is based partly on the life of a Carthaginian lady, served as a model for the early modern tragic form in theatre. He also helped promote the early career of architect Andrea Palladio, with whom he maintained a long friendship.
