The Coast of Norway from Christiania to Hammerfest

London and Boston: W. M. Thompson / Roberts Brothers 1872. First Edition. viii, 24 pages + 12 full color chromolithographed plates, each preceded by an acid free buffer leaf and tissue. Oblong Folio (13 1/2 x 16 3/4 inches). Publisher's beveled boards with gold and green decorations on the cover. Professionally rebound with original spine laid down and with individual leaves tied together archivally with tissue and sewn. The book was originally bound in gutta percha style where individual leaves were "tipped" onto a spine with glue. This commonly leads to leaves separating from the spine section as here before being rebound. Several pages with new paper / tissue restorations to fore edges (not affecting text). Some minor dampstaining. Plates are bright and clean with some minor dampstaining to some upper right corner. Very Good. Cloth. [21067]

The first (and only) edition. An advertisement from Jan 31, 1871 (copy included) includes many press releases. The first is from the Times: "This standard is fully attained by most of the views in the Coast of Norway, by Elijah Walkton, F. G.S. ... In the majority a bold and original treatment on the part of the lithographer, as well as the artist, has been singularly successful. Huge snowy mountains uprearing themselves against a sky deeply blue, or brilliant and tender with sunset, or grey with gathering clouds, are Mr. Walton's favorite subjects, and his lithographer has contrived to render his originals so well that several of the pictures might at a short distance be mistaken for water-color drawings. The views are supplemented by a lively account of a tour through the scenery from which they are taken, and the volume will not fall into the hands of many autumn tourists without turning the thoughts of some and the steps of some others towards the winding fjords and snow-clad mountains which look out upon them from it's pages." The Pall Mall Gazette: "The twelve chromo-lithographs of Norwegian scenery contained in this handsome volume, with twice as many pages of letterpress, are the result of a painting and sketching expedition from Stavanger to Hammerfest and back to Christiania."

The list of views includes Christiania, The Island of Torghatten, The Lofoten Islands from the Vest Fjord - Midnight Sun, The Rafsund - Lofoten Islands, Glaciers near Nus Fjord, Hammerfest, Vaagekallen, Lofoten Islands, The Fondalen Glaciers, The Hestmann, The Crags of Hronelen, Bergen, and Langaardsund, Near Gragero.

9 copies showing in OCLC as of 11/2014. Even scarcer in the marketplace, often broken for the great color plates. By Walton, and descriptive texts by Bonney. Several plates are signed by C. Clarke, a lithographer.
