Bethesda, Maryland: National Institute of Health 1960. A group of four xeroxed NIH reprints of Gajdusek's personal journals and notes among primitive cultures, one inscribed by him. The four items are: 1) 'Journal of an expedition in the Libyan Sahara to Kufra 1960', [6], 1948, printed blue wrappers, printed November 1971. 2) "Paraguayan Indian Expeditions to the Guayaki and Chaco Indians August 25, 1963 to September 28, 1963", [14], 125 pages. Printed blue wrappers, originally printed in October 1963, this copy reprinted with index October 1971, 3) 'Journal of a Trip to the Shepherd, Banks, and Torres Islands and to Espiritu Santo and Efate in the New Hebrides November 15, 1963 to December 24, 1963', [4] 91 pages, comb bound printed blue wrappers, printed April 1965, and 4) 'Journal of an Expedition ot the Western Caroline Islands August 26 to October 6, 1964', [2], 123 pages. Comb bound printed blue wrappers. This copy is INSCRIBED "To Dr. Janeway with my gratitude for your encouragement + interest in my work and wanderings, Carleton" on the title page. Not dated. The four items offered here are journals, reprints of his work in various locations that were published for their research value by the Nationa Institute of Health (NIH), Study, etc. Gajdusek and Baruch S. Blumberg were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in Physiology or Medicine 1976 for "their discoveries concerning new mechanisms for the origin and dissemination of infectious diseases". Gadjusek is perhaps best known for his work on kuru, the first human prion disease demonstrated to be infectious (wikipedia).
