Clinton Joseph Davisson shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1937 with George Paget Thomson "for their experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals" The article offered here, published several years after Davisson and Germer at Bell Labs did their key work independently of Thomson, provides a detailed history with the clarity of looking backward. This article is based on an address given by invitation before Section A, British Association for the Advancement of Science, Glasgow in September 1928. Pages 41-51 contain a detailed description by Nobel Laureate Davisson concerning how he and Dr. Germer started experiments to confirm de Broglie's wave theory of mechanics, and traces some clues back to 1919 with work done at Bell Laboratory.
