The Discoverers' Lens : a Photographic History of the Simple Microscope 1680-1880

Tallmadge, Ohio: Classical Science Press 2012. First Edition. xxxv, [1], 299 pages. Original green cloth with leather spine label. 9 x 13 inches. SIGNED by author Giordano on the title page. Fine. Cloth. [23083]

An expanded catalogue of the simple microscope collection built by Giordano (collector, bookseller, and instrument enthusiast) over many years. Each item is illustrated with color photographs, most by Spartan Giordano, Ray's son. For those familiar with 'Singular Beauty' (the original 8 x 8 inch softcover exhibition catalogue of this collection), Discoverers' Lens is a new edition with substantially expanded and larger format full color photographs of the collection. Selected instruments are given multiple page treatments. Unlike the original Singular Beauty catalog, The Discoverers' Lens images are sufficiently large to be useful comparing to objects in hand. Since Singular Beauty was issued, the Confluence Museum in Lyon, France purchased the majority of the Giordano collection. Hence, each text page has an explanation of the instrument in both English and French. A new introduction by the French curator and addendum by Ray add to the vision of the collection, and it's future uses. Finally, an index helps the collector find instrument by type, etc. A worthwhile addition to any scientific instrument reference collection.
