Publisher's original green pebbled cloth with blind stamped decorations. Corner tips and head/tail spine with wear. Previous owner's label affixed to front endpaper. Rear hinge with thin archival tissue repair. Gutter dampstaining to the first few pages in decreasing intensity (worst on the front 2 flyleaves, but still partly visible on title page and a few pages past. Pages 110-111 with dark brown stain from old newspaper insert. Unreadable embossed owner name on rear pastedown. Several pages have creases from reading turns. Light foxing throughout. Small ding to outer hinge rear panel. Pencil scribbles on endpapers. Even with all, presents nicely on the shelf and not a bad copy. Very Good. Cloth. [23682]


1st American Edition, fourth state. The First American edition, fourth state (Freeman 380) with "New edition, revised and augmented by the author" on the title page, and a supplement (pages 426-432) of authors additions and alterations. As such, this volume actually improves on the first edition, first state, with additional information.
