New York: Daniel Adee, 176 Fulton Street [1874]. Later printing. 4, v-vii, [1-blank], [9]-581 pages. 8vo. Original green cloth with salmon endpapers. Gilt titles and spine decoration head and tail. Fraying to head of spine panel, with top 1 3/4 inches of front joint cloth wearing through. Front hinge paper cracked. Rear hinge sound. A few signatures starting to come loose, partially separating from the stitching. Still a fundamentally sound copy noting a few dings to the board edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Sir Isaac Newton. Corner tips turned with minor wear, minor shelf wear overall. Previous owner's name on front pastedown endpaper. Good. Cloth. [24226]

Although the title page notes "First American Edition" and the copyright page is dated 1846, this is a later printing, published circa 1874 based on lack of portrait subscription or date, 176 Fulton Street address and lack of title page date (see Wallis & Wallis 27.2, Cohen #3).

The First American edition was first published in 1848 (NOT 1846) and first editions are routinely mis-identified based on the copyright page information. The work was reprinted for many years from the same stereotype, issues differing only by date (or absence of date), publisher, publisher's address, and portrait subscription (or lack thereof). In 1970 scholar and historian I.B.Cohen in ''The American editions of Newton's Principia'' (Wallis 62.472) provided a much needed guide which updated Babson and Gray's work on this title. Cohen's work was updated by and subsequently incorporated into Wallis's "Newton and Newtoniana 1672-1975, A Bibliography" by Peter and Ruth Wallis (See 26, 27.2, 62.472). See also Babson 23; Gray 26 both referring to the first American Edition.

As is often the case with American cloth bindings from this period, this work is hard to find in nice condition, and this example exhibits the usual wear to the binding.
