The American Woods, Exhibited by actual Specimens and with copius Explanatory Text PART 1 ONLY

Lowville, NY: Romeyn Beck Hough 1910. Third Edition. Originally issued (with the help of Hough's daughter) in 14 volumes, we present here VOLUME ONE ONLY, the THIRD EDITION. This volume is housed in a green cloth slipcase, with an 3 sided inner sleeve and a text description for that volume in original paper wraps (edge reinforcements). The set is complete, with all sample sheets and text description pamphlet present. It contains 27 card sheets, documenting 25 species of wood. Wood samples in each are generally bright and clean. Each card contains a transverse, radial, and tangential section, in addition to the names of the wood samples. These are wafer thin sections suitable for viewing through a microscope or for viewing by holding up to the light, BUT a number have sustained significant damage. The following cards have significant damage (it is normal for a section to have a crack or small chip, these we haven't noted): card 2: transverse section with 50% loss ; card 4: radial section with 70% loss, tangential section with 10% loss; card 5: tangential section with 50% loss; card 6: small chip (1/4 x 1 inch) loss; card 7b: small thin slice lacking (possibly insect damage from original slice??); card 10: 20% loss to transverse section ; card 13: small triangular piece (1/2 x 1 inch longest dimensions) loss in tangential section; card 16: 1/8 x 1 inch loss radial section; card 17: 1/8 inch by one inch loss transverse section; card 22: some chipping in the transverse and radial sections; card 23: 2 tears in the transverse section; card 24: 20% loss in transverse section; card 25: 50% loss in transverse section, long tear in tangential section. In all, 25 species documented with 81 sections on 27 cards. 11 cards with more than 20% loss, a few additional with minor losses. Good. Boards. [26093]

A useful reference work for those interested in identifying woods that in many cases are no longer available (furniture trade, antiques trade, natural history historians, etc). Volume 1 was originally issued in 1888, but here 1910 in the Third edition.
