Providence, Rhode Island: Brown University 1871. 4to., pp. [ff 2] + 219; contemporary half roan and marbled paper boards; boards scuffed and worn; spine stamped in gilt; spine rubbed and faded; original and later holograph annotations to front endpaper; lined leaves clean; holograph generally legible; good overall. Good. Boards. [20211]

Holograph notes in pen and pencil made by Herbert Almy (Class of 1873) from three undergraduate classes at Brown, including chemistry (instructor probably John H Appleton), Geology with Professor John H. Appleton, and "Intellectual Philosophy" with Brown President Ezekiel Robinson. (1815-1894). Robinson, a Baptist clergyman and theologian, was Brown's president from 1872 to 1889. The lectures on philosophy are mainly concerned with the "Science of Mind" -- psychology, consciousness, cognitive faculties, space and time, etc. Questions on moral philosophy are handled in separate part of the course, following the sections on mind. Several ephemeral pieces are pasted in, including a pamphlet by Professor of Chemistry John H Appleton on water and lecture outlines for 7 lectures in the Winter of 1871-2. An interesting and fairly thorough documentation of these lectures at Brown in the early 1870s. Appleton in the late 1870s published several books on chemistry and laboratory work for application in the classroom.
