Philadelphia: C G Childs Engraver 1827-[1830]. 37 un-numbered leaves + 24 plates + 1 plan + additional engraved title page (includes a list of subscribers). 5.5 x 8.75 inches. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Full red calf binding with old professional rebacking. Wear at the joints, old brown linen tape hinge reinforcement. Wear at the corners and edges affecting some gilt decorations. Gilt hand tooled borders, with blindstamped tooling inside of that. Simple gilt rules on spine with title "Views in Phila-delphia" in gilt. Browing and foxing throughout. Leaf 12 with lower right corner chipped affecting 2 letters. Plate of the United States Mint frayed (probably loose and then reinserted). Plate with Penitentary Plan closely trimmed, resulting in very small loss at foredge. Complete per Sabin 99588. #29 on the Binder's Directions page notes "Lathe Work on the Cover - Embellishments." and offers credit to Fairman, Draper, Underwood & Co. and S. H. Carpenter. We believe this credits the engraving of the original wrapper covers (in parts) not present in this bound form. Other engravers credited include Childs, Steel, Cone, Tucker, Fairman, Hay, and Saulnier. Artists include Birch, Sully, Strickland, Reinagle, Doughty, Capt. Watson, Lehman, Clay, Raser, Haviland and Mason. Signature of Samuel Breck (one of the subscribers) on front flyleaf. Signed in ink twice by "Mary Plumstead 1830" on the title page and flyleaf and also "Mary Plumstead from her Uncle S. Breck 1830" on another page. Pasted onto front flyleaf is an engraving (cut from another source) of the Residence of the late Anthony Benezet No 115 Chestnut Street Philadelphia. Good. Full calf. [22995]

"Cephas G. Childs, one of the foremost engravers in Philadelphia, born on September 8, 1793 in Plumstead Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, managed some of the earliest premier commercial lithograph firms in the city. Through his partnerships in the firms Pendleton, Kearny & Childs (1829-1830), Childs & Inman (1830-1833), and Childs & Lehman (1833-1835), along with his active pursuit of skilled artists and lithographers, such as Albert Newsam, P. S. Duval and Henry Inman, Childs facilitated the growth and popularity of lithography as a printing medium in Philadelphia." (Philadelphia on Stone Digital Biography)

A nice example of early American illustrated books. Sabin 99588, noting it is "Improved title of Sabin 12731, Vol 4."
