Rouen: Jean Boulley 1637.  + (folding double-page leaf) + 148 pages. 8vo. Woodcut map on title page, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut illustrations throughout. Early full leather binding with red spine label. Previous owner stamp on verso of front flyleaf, and another name (?) inked on title page just above map. Double-page inserted leaf inserted opposite A1. Very closely trimmed, affecting a few headlines and catch words. Clearly read, with occasional smudging, creasing. Ink stain to several pages in gutter affecting a few letters. Light dampstaining throughout. Very Good. Boards. 
The fifth edition of a well known book on proportional compasses. The title roughly translates to "The Use of a Compass in Proportion." The double-page leaf has 2 illustrations and is signed in the woodcut at top by Daniel Chorez. Two additional illustrations are found integral to the pagination (pages 105, 109) and are signed DH in the center. Each of these full page illustrations is of a proportional compass (also known as a sector or military compass). The first edition was published in 1564. OCLC notes additional dates including 1653, 1664, 1688, 1748, and 1769 (although the last 2 may actually have been done by Oznam). OCLC notes a single copy of the 1637 edition at University of Wisconsin (77613710).
