Volume Two: Photo-plates (photogravure?). 8vo. 7 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches. Professionally rebound to style. Each leaf is three hole punched. The cloth (portfolio) covers are also three hole punched front and rear, with brass grommets and string ties which hold the assemblage together. Original front panel preserved and laid down. Half title present, withdrawn stamp over institutional stamp. Pencilled notation with title of volume 1. Last page appears to be an advertisement. Plates 2 through 120 inclusive (complete as issued). A "classic 1935 comparative study of ape [ and human ] emotions and intelligence." ( Darwin Museum Series )
From about 1913 to 1916, Madam Kohts studied a young chimpanzee named Joni in captivity and documented photographically and with detailed notes it's behavior including it's perceived emotions. In 1925, Koht's own son Roody was born, and she again took copious notes and photographs, this time with her son as the subject. After many years of work, she in 1929 she began a comparative study of the two. This study, offered here in the original edition, contains a wealth of photographic comparisons between the two, in over 145 photo-plates (containing some 600 or so images). The images convey so much information that some reviewers thought the lack of an English translation (until quite recently) was not a significant challenge. The main text is in Russian, with a short English summary at the end. While the photographic captions are in Russian, the short English text contains English captions as well.
We're pleased to offer the original edition, PLUS the first English translation of this work (Oxford University Press, 2002), edited by Frans B. M. De Waal. A 1937 review in the Journal of Genetic Psychology (Vol 50, pp 465-467) notes "Madam Kohts is unquestionably an observer of ingenuity, patience, and scientific restraint. In a double sense this is a contribution to comparative psychology...It seems to us that she has succeeded better in this task of critical comparison of two species than have those studies which emphasize somewhat too strongly similarities, identities, and simian precocities."
Apparently issued in an edition of 775 copies, the original work is very scarce today with a dozen copies (some represented as partial sets) in institutions, and no copies for sale as of this writing. Scarce in the trade.
