Chicago: M. A. Donohue & Co. 1917. [32 pages] plus wrappers. Oblong 4to - 16 x 9 3/4 inches. Stapled color pictorial card wrappers. Upper corner creased and with some scuffing to the rear panel. Small amount of dampstaining lower right corner, worst on the corner, extending in to the lower margin (progressively less as the book continues). Paper browned throughout, the production values of this item didn't predict it's survival this long. A nice copy of an item usually well used and/or colored. A few light scratches and closed edge tears (thumbed). Very Good. Wraps. [26752]
Copyright 1917 by J. Keeley by arrangement with ESSANAY COMPANY. Apparently reprints original black and white Charlie Chaplin comic panels. Instructions on the "copyright page" tell youngsters how to do proper color mixing with their paint box (presumably to color the comic panels - here entirely untouched). Front and rear panels colored, with offsetting internally from (presumably) other examples in the production process. Each individual comic is copyrighted as well, most 1915-16. Several strips with artist signature "Carothers".
OCLC notes only six copies with this title, but with different page counts (16, 20, and 30 pages). Given the very low paper quality, we suspect incomplete copies are common. Likewise, we suspect that the 16 page copies is actually 16 LEAVES, or 32 un-numbered pages.
