[Place of publication not identified]: [publisher not identified] [circa 1874]. First Edition. , [1-blank] pages, leaves of plates. Covers 13 x 10 inches (oblong 4to). 3/4 leather over pebbled cloth boards. "Schreiber & Son's Portraits of Noted Horses of America" in gilt embossed on front cover. Recently recased with new endpapers. Boards stained (old dampstaining with some recent coloring). Original brass clasp at foreedge. Following that are 50 mounted album prints on 25 cards. Each side contains an 8 x 5 3/8 inch albumen photograph in the center surrounded by a printed yellow border (8 3/4 x 6 5/8 inches), letterpress horse's name centered in the yellow border, and "Schreiber & Son's Photo" in white within the yellow border lower right. Outside the yellow border, and centered on the page below is a letterpress history of the horse pictured. On one case (ELMO) there is a cancel description pasted over the original. Most of the photographs have copyright notices for Schreiber & Son's Washington DC printed in the negative, dated variously dated from 1871 through 1874. The tonality of the images vary, from faded (most prominently at the beginning and end of the album) to strong and crisp. Most of the later dated images are much stronger and darker images. Given that some of the letterpress descriptions note future dates that had already passed by the time this work was published, we suspect that the publication was compiled with a combination of earlier stock photographs and newly printed images. Very Good. Boards.
Published with the encouragement of breeders who were impressed with the photographic horse portraits of horses Schreiber had collected. Not a common work, with less than dozen examples in OCLC/Worldcat as of this writing. Although the spine notes Vol. 1 we believe this is the only volume published.
