Publisher's green cloth with gilt illustration and titles on front cover. Dark brown endpapers. Gilt decorations bright and clean, much better than usually seen. Variant one of the binding (see below). Previous owner's stamp and address "Alfred O. Hicks" on title page and scattered on a few other pages. Very Good. Cloth. [27215]

The first English Language translation of the fourth edition of Van Heurck's "Le Microscope, Sa Construction, Son Maniement, La Technique ... " published in 1891. Here translated, re-edited and augmented by Wynne E. Baxter.

For the bibliographer and completist: A) The title page notes three plates which has caused some confusion for dealers and collectors. Plate 1 (the frontispiece) is chine-collé portrait of Van Heurck with facsimile signature dated 1892. The second plate is tipped in opposite page 64 and shows nine figures of photo-micrographs titled "Tests of the Microscope." The third plate (according to the table of contents) is found opposite page 366 and illustrates the path of rays through the microscope. Unfortunately that last plate is also marked as a figure. Looking elsewhere there is page 59, marked Plate VII, which could also be plate three but which is not called out in the table of contents as such. As with other dealers, all the copies we've seen have had this same arrangement and we believe the book is complete as issued. B) We have handled two variants of this work. Variant one (as here) with board height 11 3/8 inches, just the publisher's name on the spine and on the front cover different typography most obviously seen where the three parts of the "M" in "Microscope" reach the baseline. In the Variant two, the board height is 11 1/2 inches, and the spine has an additional device above the publisher's name - a hand holding a torch with the phrase "Capio Lumen". Also, the typography is different on the title page, most easily distinguished by the middle part of the "M" in "Microscope" not reaching the baseline. We haven't been able to determine any precedence to these variants, nor notice any obvious changes in content.

The Best Edition of this work, a book much prized by microscope collectors and practitioners which provides large scale illustrations of many of the best microscopes of the time, and provides detailed guidance on their use.
