[ various ]: [ unknown ] 1990s. A large archive of roughly 200 professionally shot photographs of movie stars and other cultural icons, many taken during what appear to be openings for various Planet Hollywood restaurant locations. 8 x 10 inch glossy photographs on Kodak Professional paper. Condition is fine for the most part, with occasional images where two photographs were stuck together and then separated (resulting in some loss to surface gloss). Some images have numbers on the back, no doubt allowing identification of, and reprinting, by the photographer. We saw no photographer stamps or identification in the archive. Some duplication (we'd say less than 10% including different angles or cropping). Near Fine. Photograph. [27512]

“Planet Hollywood [ now Planet Hollywood International, Inc. ] is a theme restaurant inspired by the popular portrayal of Hollywood....It was launched in New York City on October 22, 1991, with the backing of Hollywood stars Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The actors recruited were paid for their appearances and endorsements through an employee stock ownership plan. Further celebrity endorsement included actors Whoopi Goldberg, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Don Johnson, Melanie Griffith, Tom Arnold, Wesley Snipes, and Danny Glover; director John Hughes; and comedian Roseanne Barr...In April 1996, Planet Hollywood went public on the New York Stock Exchange at $18 a share.” (wikipedia)

The archive depicts many locations and movie stars. Locations we determined from monogrammed caps, t-shirts, jackets and backgrounds include New York, Paris (19th Sept 1994), Sydney, London, Beverly Hills, New Orleans (May 13, 1995), Hollywood, Hong Kong (1994), Honolulu, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Walt Disney World, Mall of America, Miami, Aspen, Dallas, Atlanta, Helsinki, Vancouver, Houston, Orlando, Las Vegas, Barcelona and Indianapolis. Some locations are well represented (New York has the most with over 50 images), some with only a single image. Many (over 50) we can't identify but could probably be determined without a lot of work.

Some of the actors depicted (some of them investors as noted above) include Rosanne Barr and Tom Arnold, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Sylvester Stallone, Charlie Sheen, Christian Slater, Michael J. Fox, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Sharon Stone, Jackie Chan, Steven Seagal, Dolph Lundgren, Cindy Crawford, Antonio Banderas, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Goldie Hawn, (Olsen?) sisters, Dudley Moore, David Hasselhoff, Michael Chiklis, Jim Belushi, Diana Ross, Sigourny Weaver, Hulk Hogan, Priscilla Presley, Hilary Swank, Mohamed Ali, Geena Davis, the Smothers Brothers, George Clooney, Nasty Boys, Lawrence Fishburne, Maria Shriver, Neil Patrick Harris, William Baldwin, Christie Brinkley, Jane Fonda, Tom Hanks, Michael Kane, Katherine Heigl, Ben Affleck, Jane Russell, Andre Agassi, Gérard Depardieu, Tom Selleck, Woody Harrelson, Whoopi Goldberg, David Copperfield, Rosie O'Donnell, Heather Locklyer, Tia Carrere, William Shatner, Ming-Na Wen, Mel Gibson. Often shown singly, sometimes in groups or with props from their movies.

An interesting snapshot of movie star power in the 1990s and one resultant popular culture business venture. It is interesting to note that this particular venture, while initially tremendously successful, has since entered bankruptcy at least twice, and is now a shadow of it's former self as popular sentiment and tastes have changed.
