[ Wisconsin ] Lake Geneva Picturesque and Descriptive

Boston, Massachusetts: Artistic Publishing Association after 1881. Title leaf + [10] pages of text + 72 numbered "plates" (photomechanical reproductions of photographs of buildings, local sites, etc) most two per leaf, (printed on recto only) and with interleaved tissues. 10 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches. Folio. Publisher's brown leather embossed covers gilt (alligator pattern in places) with plain leather spine. Leather worn and perished at extremities. Front cover nearly detached, spine leather browned (should be rebacked). Some interleaved tissues torn. The photographs are generally bright and clean with occasional light thumb soiling. Original decorative patterned white/gold endpapers. Title page vignette shows two Tipped in at the title page is a small slip noting "A limited number only of this work has been issued. - Persons desirous of securing one or more copies, should address at an early date, the Artistic Publishing Association, 3817 Michigan Ave, Chicago, Ill." A penciled note internally says "after 1879" although the latest dated in the text introduction is 1882. Good. Boards. [27970]

Rare with OCLC showing three copies, all in Wisconsin. Worthpoint shows only one copy sold at an online auction in Feb 2016 for 1500 (suggesting these are collotypes) and noting only two copies in libraries at that time. Nothing in Rare Book Hub.

Artistic Publishing Association did at least one other area, Elgin, IL, in this photobook style (it is scarce as well with only a few copies in OCLC). The text introduction, which explains each plate, is very detailed (who owns the houses depicted, etc) and the latest date in the introduction is 1882. So we've dated this after 1881 as a result. J. E. Heg, noted as a contributor in the text, also produced a newspaper in Lake Geneva from 1874-1894.
