Defender Photo Supply Co. manufactured and distributed photographic supplies for at least 50 years (1895-1945). They distributed "Vulcan Plate Negatives" and other items with the ARGO name as used in this catalog. We include a printout of an advertisement from American Photography, Vol 6, Aug 1912 (pages VI-VII) which notes that the diamond symbol and use of "Photo-Purity" were adopted in March of 1912. Abel's Photographic Weekly, Volume 25, 1920, includes an advertisement for "photo-pure DEFENDER tested" chemicals as found on page 4. Some additional research would no doubt allow a better dating of the sample book, but it is an excellent example, and something the photographer's shop would have on the counter for sales work. It would have been too expensive to mass-produce for consumers. Although unsigned, this sample book most definitely came from the company.

Sample images include horse racing, a bucolic bridge scene, fencing in an outdoor setting with judging, a beautiful woman, another scenic, shops by the water, and another rural cabin. The postcards are of an industrial water scene, another wharf scene, a large country building with a thatched roof, a foreign street scene, and lastly children in front of a thatched roof home.

No listings in OCLC, although brochures of Defender Photo Supply Co. do appear. A rare survival.
