In the preface (New York: Feb.1873) Tyndall describes having left London for the United States having almost nothing written down for his lectures. His friend Prof. Joseph Henry arranged for Tyndall to deliver lectures during his stay, scheduling and setting up lectures as possible. Tyndall notes he wanted to "leave something behind" as he had not finished the job and had not been able to respond to requests for visits to the West - hence this book!

The English edition (London: Longmans, Green, and Co.) was also published in 1873, with advertisements in the rear dated March 1873 and a preface to the English edition dated June 1873 (noting certain changes had been made to accomodate readers on both sides of the Atlantic). So while in many cases Tyndall's first editions were published in London, in this case the first was evidently published here in the United States.

The range of his lectures are quite broad and reflect many topics of interest in the late 19th century.
