Author "Percy Williams Bridgman (April 21, 1882 – August 20, 1961) was an American physicist who received the 1946 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the physics of high pressures. He also wrote extensively on the scientific method and on other aspects of the philosophy of science. The Bridgman effect, the Bridgman–Stockbarger technique, and the high-pressure mineral bridgmanite are named after him." (Wikipedia)

Previous owner SS Stevens was eminent psychologist Stanley Smith Stevens. "In 1934 Stanley Smith Stevens received his Ph.D. from the newly independent psychology department at Harvard, and two years later accepted a position as instructor in experimental psychology. Known professionally as “S. S. Stevens” and by his colleagues as “Smitty” in the ensuing decades, Stevens built a renowned laboratory of experimental psychology in the basement of Memorial Hall at Harvard. His own research focused on the relationship between the perceived magnitude of a stimulus and its objective physical magnitude. More generally, Stevens was a pioneer in psychoacoustics, and a major organizer of the field of experimental psychology...He is listed as number 52 on the American Psychological Association’s list of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the 20th century.
