The pleasant journey; and Scenes in town and country

New Haven: S. Babcock (1844?). 64 pages. Pagination includes 8 leaves of plates. 5 5/8 x 4 1/2 inches. Publisher's printed wrappers. Worn, foxed throughout, with no spine. Stitched. This example is interesting in that it appears that the original wrappers, printed in a blue ink on blue paper, have another wrapper with (from what we can see) an identical design pasted on top, this time on a tan paper with blue ink. Both are affixed to endpapers that are a thin blue blotter like paper. Both the front and rear wrappers have been partly removed revealing the underlying wrapper. The front flyleaf has a gift inscription: " May this certify that Miss Lucy A Latham has by the merotiorious conduct and attention to her study distinguished herself among ? schoolmates. I.L. (?) Denison Inst. Apr 3rd 1846"

Verso of the title page is a printed note "To My Young Readers" from Teller, and is dated in print Roseville Hall, 1844. Fair. Wraps. [28917]

Number Five of Teller's Tales, New Series.

It is unclear whether this is a publisher's cover replacement for some unknown reason, or perhaps a make-do repair for some reason by a reader to preserve a well worn copy. Either way, it is an interesting item.

Price: $50.00
