According to the preface, the first publication of the Chemical Thermodynamics Laboratory at Osaka University. Seki was involved in the development of sophisticated calorimeters, and worked at Osaka through several incarnations of their chemical thermodynamics laboratories. An overview provided with the book notes that Seki received 'high acclaim from the international community' for his work in 'the discovery of a phase transition in hexagonal ice' that 'solved an ice problem [which had been] debated over the [previous] 50 years.'
