The Poetical present. With Beautiful Engravings.

Worcester, [Massachusetts]: J. Grout, Jr. 1840-1861. 24 pages. 9 x 11.5 cm. Printed blue wrappers, string bound. Wear to the extremities, penciled owner name on first page, some staining. Very Good. Wraps. [27361]

Contains the following story vignettes: We are seven -- Stop! stop! pretty water -- Nancy Ray -- The frightful monster (with Moral) -- Love and duty to parents -- Our father who art in heaven -- Fly away, lady bird -- Little bird! little bird! -- The good children -- The race for the mitten.

Variants abound for this title, with no established priority that we are aware of. The present example has a printed front wrapper with a horse and buggy under the title. Page [4] is an alphabet. There is no printer noted (some variants note Howland as a printer). Rear wrapper depicts two children coming home with their father with various small animals in the yard. AAS notes that Jonathan Grout published under his own name in Worcester, Mass., from 1840 to 1861, hence the date range we've proposed here.
