The Lumiere brothers Louis and Auguste are widely credited with many early cinematic firsts including a presentation of workers leaving their factory. While there are earlier innovators, the Lumiere brothers were the first to take cinema into the form we see today where many people could watch a movie at the same time (earlier innovators could only show movies to several people at a time - the Lumiere's added projection). Auguste later was involved in medical work and discoveries, while Louis remained largely dedicated to the cinema and photography.
This paper by Louis loosely translated is "Physical. - Capillary flow, diffusion and displacement." In the paper, Lumiere appears to examine capillary flows in tissue that can be created without an external shell, highlighting a few economic opportunities and their industrial applications. A more thorough reading would help identify what if anything is useful in the photographic field for which Lumiere is so well known. Our French is not strong enough to render a complete description.
