Orignally published in Cambridge at the University Press (for the Institute of Navigation) in 1966. This is a quality reprint by the Gemmary done in 1989 (Harriet Wynter Ltd published the name index in 1980).
Part I contains an extensive narrative of different historical periods from Chapter One (1714-1730) through Chapter VIII (1820-1840). Part II (pages 108-485) is a list of The Practitioners with Biographical notes.
