Philadelphia and others: Penn Publishing Co and others circa 1906-1932. HUMPHREY, SETH K. Loafing Through the Pacific. Philadelphia: Penn Publishing Co., (1929).
4to., green cloth gilt; near very good.
Reprint (first edition 1927). Among his several books, Seth K. Humphrey wrote this title on the Pacific and East Asia, a reflection of the interest the region held for American tourists in the early decades of the 20th century. A number of the photographs Humphrey took on his tour were published in his book. Vintage copies of these photos -- perhaps the original prints themselves -- are present in the inventory below. However, the photos in this collection far exceed the number that were used for publication in the book.
Nearly 200 original photographs (some duplicates), many of which were reproduced in the book. These include 71 original photos (silver prints) each 3.4 x 5 inches and 78 photographic prints, each measuring s.5 x 1.75 inches. These latter do not appear to be contact prints.
Of the 71 larger images, there are approximately 17 photographs of China, including views of Peking, Canton, & Hong Kong. About half of these are identified with captions in pencil by the author on the verso of the image. There are also approximately nine photographs of Japan and one photo of Korea -- most are identified. There are approximately 47 photographs of Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, the Philippines, New Zealand, and Australia. About half of these are identified or otherwise annotated.
[SCRAPBOOK] Printed reviews from various newspapers nationwide of books published by Seth K. Humphrey, including The Indian Dispossessed, Mankind, Loafing Through the Pacific, and Loafing Through Africa.
