Bardeen, Brattain and Shockley won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956 "for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect." The first paper in this BSTJ issue, "Surface Properties of Germanium", is found on pages 1-41 and describe experimental results that confirm "direct evidence for the existence of a space charge layer at the free surface of a semiconductor."
