The Electric-Lamp Industry : Technological Change and Economic Development from 1800 to 1947

New York: The Macmillan Company 1949. First Edition. xxvii, 526 pages. 8vo. Publisher's grey cloth in a printed red and white dust jacket. Dj is faded, spine almost unreadable. Laid in is a note from the desk of "Henry F. Callahan" dated 8/1/1961:

"Dr. Edwin H. Land: I thought you would find this book of interest, as we discussed on the phone. In order to assist you in reading some of the highlights, I have marked certain passages. We feel that Mr. Bright did a very good job on this, although I don't believe any conclusions are exact in regard to his comments on correcting the patent system." Signed H.F.C. [Henry F. Callahan]" Very Good / Fair. Cloth. [29775]

There is a record in internet searches of a Henry F. Callahan who worked at Sylvannia which makes sense in context. Callahan didn't write any comments specifically, only highlighting certain passages, some mentioning Sylvannia and in other places patents, in particular a section on the Tantalum Lamp. There was clear interest in this at Polaroid. A series of Polaroid patents in 1959-1960 reference another patent on Tantalum carbide lamps in their applications. Further research might determine what the Callahan/Land connection was and/or what Land was trying to accomplish that this book might have helped with. A small window into an inventor's process - talking with industry insiders looking for sources of information.
